Title: Resilience Through Mind and Heart

This self-portrait explores my journey of overcoming unwanted and harmful behaviour by a former boss, who belittled my emotional response and discouraged my academic ambitions. Reporting him led to my unjust termination, symbolized by the duct tape over my mouth, representing silenced voices. In the painting, I hold a brain in one hand and a heart in the other, signifying the dual power of intellect and emotion that helped me navigate this ordeal. A glass wall stands before me, representing the glass ceiling women face in their professional lives. Despite these barriers, the presence of books authored by inspiring women highlights the strength drawn from diverse female voices and the critical role of supportive communities. This artwork embodies the principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA). It underscores the necessity of diverse perspectives and equitable opportunities in dismantling systemic barriers. The painting is a testament to resilience, advocating for a world where reporting harassment does not lead to retaliation but to justice and support. Through this piece, I aim to convey the importance of both mental and emotional resilience in overcoming personal and systemic challenges, while emphasizing the profound impact of DEIA in fostering an inclusive and empowering environment for all.

This painting was displayed at a United States Embassy following a DEIA art competition win within the Department of State. It was removed from the walls on January 21, 2025, the day after the presidential inauguration. Its removal became part of its meaning.
