Title: Landmannalaugar

My husband and I were hiking in Landmannalaugar in early June when our phones received a warning: volcanic activity in the area, proceed with caution. The sulfur smell was already in the air. The mountains around us were shifting through colours I had never seen in nature before; yellows, oranges, deep reds, all streaked through with grey and black and white snow. I painted the tiny zigzag trail in gold because that is where we walked; two small humans threading through something ancient and indifferent and overwhelmingly beautiful. The blue pool of geothermal water sits in the valley below. The earth was restless beneath our feet.
